About Peters Township

Peters Township was named after William “Indian” Peters and was incorporated as one of the 13 original townships of Washington County in 1781 when the county became part of Pennsylvania. Prior to that, the territory of Peters Township had belonged to Virginia.

A farming community at first, coal became a major industry and spurred the growth of the area as the nation industrialized. Today, the shale gas industry is a source of growth and prosperity for the community.

The Township’s current arrowhead logo was adopted with the new Home Rule Charter. It was designed by local artist Robert Chamberlain, who used an actual arrowhead found in Peters Township as his inspiration!

Peters Township boasts a multitude of notable places to eat and shop. The community is conveniently located mere minutes from Interstates 70 and 79, so entertainment and shopping venues including Southpointe, the Meadows Casino, and the Tanger Outlets are nearby.

Peters Township is known for its top-ranking school district, excellent sports programs and high-end new construction. The Little Lake Theater is a favorite community activity, as residents attend shows year-round. Peters Township has its own lake, Peters Lake, which features dog-friendly walking and biking trails, fishing, boating and much more!
